How to Find Time to Reduce Stress and Anxiety

In the hustle and bustle of our high-achieving lives, and in the weight of the stressors in our society and world, finding a moment of calm and clarity can seem elusive. For those of us who juggle countless responsibilities, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and disconnected from our inner wisdom and purpose.

Raise your hand if you know you should be proactive about managing your stress levels by incorporating some kind of morning or evening routine, but when it comes to the actual moment, you are tired and stressed. You hit the ground running in the morning and the sofa or bed exhausted at night. And your mind tells you that you don’t know what to do anyways to make things better and you just don’t have time!

I totally get this!

When I let stress and anxiety dictate my days, I feel it everywhere in my life: my relationships, my emotional state and happiness levels, my physical health, and my energy.

But when I remember that I have the power within me to prioritize stress reduction, I am a totally different person. Happier, more intentional and purposeful, more connected.

Oftentimes, we stay in our old habits, even when we want to make a change and support ourselves, because we don’t have the systems and tools in place to make it easy.

Here are four tips to let stress reduction routines be easy so that you can use tomorrow morning (or even right now!) to start to reduce your stress and strengthen your resilience.

  • Decide to start small. If you don’t have ten minutes to meditate or breathe deeply, maybe commit to five minutes, or even two minutes. The decision to slow down can help to regulate your nervous system.

  • Allow yourself to do a few things at that time, since your body and mind are used to multitasking! A five minute practice could be one minute of a gratitude practice or prayer, two minutes of breathwork, and two minutes of journaling.

  • If you have resistance to a certain practice (like you think you are bad at meditation), give yourself permission to honor that - and also to be curious about it! Quiet walks in nature, creating art, and other contemplative practices may be what you need most.

  • Devote yourself to checking in with your own inner wisdom and intuition, asking yourself what you need today. Have a plan in place for prioritizing stress reduction techniques, and let it be flexible!

Most importantly, change your mindset around it and invite in the concept of letting it be easy.
